Week after that awsome trip, Woody got a group together for a high side of good Box mission. The Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River in that 22 mile section of whitewater known as the Box is the most awinspiring peice of earth this way of the mississippi. Ginormous cliffs that you kayak next to which def make the rapids feel smaller than they really are. simply amazing river with classic moves littered through it miles. type='text'>Hyalite Creek solo

We got hit by a sweet rainstorm on the 24th. rained all day long. It also happened to be Davids Birthday. Out of nowhere I received a call from my neighbor Jason who decided he wanted to take me up to Hyalite for a lap, if the gate was open. I grabbed my shit and had it in the truck after he got done with his shift, at Northern Lights. As we drove up everything worked out, plenty of water in the creek, open gate at the bottom of the canyon, and a clean enough creek to kayak. At the putin I found out I didnt pack my skirt... as we are driving back down to go back to my place on the Gouch, three turns down the road, a kayaker named John rolls up the road. We flip er around and have a quick chat, only took 20 secs before John decided he was going to lend me his Holy skirt.. We drive back to the put in and I seal launch in to the frozen creek at 6:30pm for a chilly but well deserved and needed lap down Hyalite Creek. I feel like Schmitt wanted me to go creeking!

lots of boating going on..

going keep it short and sweet. lots of boating going on..
Lower Deer Creek was Killer again this year. heres a low side run

Hit up a section of Swan Creek, a tributary of the Gallatin, that my buddy Andy tipped me off to it last summer, Im calling it the Micro Mank from now on.. cant wait to see what high water looks like.

and heres a clip of the Laramie River after our Bluegrass skunk, some Big Sky boarding, some Fremont with my Sensi Pat Toft, a little four wheeling, and a run down the not so classic, south fork of the west fork of the Gallatin..

Passing of a Legend

David Schmitt was a killer dude in every aspect possible. He was a great friend, great member of his family, and sort of the guy who always went out of his way when doing anything. The sky was the limit with David and his smile brought happiness no matter the occasion. I will miss him deeply as well as the countless number of people he touched. Being reluctent to take no for an answer; we knew 402 cfs was being released else where. We set for bluegrass hoping for a possible mid day release we ended up finding 400 cfs in a normally dewatered creekbed. Little does any one know the cement bridge you cross before turning off of tunnel road on the way to bluegrass is actually the natural stream bed of the Laramie River. We decided to put on and run a mile and hike back out due to the fact that the river consisted of 16 miles of a super willow infested creek like run. we checked some of the topos for the run and it looks to be an outstanding overnighter run. Once the Duck Creek road opens the access may decrease the length of the run to 10 miles. anyways ill try and show a little of the headcam so if anybody feels it nessecary to explore the run a bit more please feel free. Wish we had more time than just three days.
Second day of the trip consisted of a day on one of our favorite runs, Box Elder Creek. Our original plan was to make it back into the middle box for a second d of BS falls. Due to a 3 hour late start we were unable to make an attempt on the beautifully dangerous gorge down stream. however we were able to still make it an exciting day for everybody, myself included. David Schmitt and I popped four Box Elder Cherries that day and it was hard not to find a smile on any face. no broken boats, one swim on loaf, and one dropped boat on the hike out( not saying names...Smauk) flows were min but great for the middle of April considering Casper,Wyoming is north of Colorado. After a great run down the gorge we rested a bit before the steep hike back out to the car on top. Anybody going for the middle and lower should ask permission for land access before storming across the private land. He is a super nice gentleman from what i gathered when we were granted access to walk on his path from the creek to the county road. His land sits on the northwest side of the creek after you hit the dam. if you find a blue dry bag and a tripod hit us up..
Third day we decided to hit the park and throw some down river tricks in our creek boats at the Casper Whitewater park. Fremont was on the Agenda but without an idea of the flow we decided it be best to save it for a day when you can actually get a gauge reading on the gorge. Sat and Sun the North Platte Basin Teacup graphs read blank for everybodies info.
It turned out to be a great weekend regardless of the fact bluegrass was a skunk and a couple of the creeks werent quite primed for runoff. Soon enough the fruits of run off will be enjoyed! stay safe everybody

Mike first scoop of triple scoop

Chase with a quick shot of wild turkey

Jason hitting the electric boofs than about to kerplunk into the wall.

Schmitt thrown down the Dung

Fremont Canyon spring stout

Fremont Spring Stout from Mike Perry on Vimeo.

It was the end of March and i just scored my first strokes on quake. I still needed more so I decided to head down to my early season mecca, Casper Wyo! Joined with two of my good buddies, Luke Sutton and Austin Woody we rallied one of the best early season runs in my own opinion, in regards to amount of time and money available...Fremont Canyon is a tight little gorge 45 mins south of Casper. The difficulty of the run is dramtically affected by the presence of sieves which come into play at different levels. Because of this, the last drop ,guarding the exit of the gorge, becomes mandatory at certain levels as well as unscoutable from with in the gorge, this gorge lies above the steel bridge. At 1800, the flow in this edit, the two drops above geranimo are easy class IV with low consequence, the top gorge with the john fremont feature have a similartiy to that of Cross Mountain Gorge with a easy III+ rating allow any one to soak in the scenery after a great blast of water at the start of the canyon.. The Big Thompson is a super fun medium volume river that had some excellent releases late into the fall this year. Similar in character to many of the runs along the Colorado front range, the Big Thompson provides a range of different class runs, like the neighboring Cache La Poudre and St. Vrain drainages.

It had been a couple months since I had last gotten in the creek boat and firing up the fairly technical class V section had me a little gripped. But after a shaky and exciting first lap it was smooth sailing punctuated with clean lines and rowdy boofs. By the third lap Leif Anderson and Conor Flynn were ready to run the often skipped crux drop of the run, Garbage Disposal. I’d say it’s an applicable name especially if you find yourself upside down. The 12-13 footer is whirlwind of sharp rocks with a fairly narrow landing, and is certainly no place for the boof impaired. The guys both had awesome lines and from there we made our way downstream for another lap. With the sun setting over the ridge by 4:00 we decided to call it a day, and what a day it was. Despite the cold, late fall boating is always a great time.

Happy boating, see you on the river

Casper Whitewater Rodeo 2010

Casper Whitewater Rodeo 2010 from Mike Perry on Vimeo.

Thanks to the Backcountry Kayak School for organizing the event and big props to great sponsers for there continued commitment NRS, Predator Helmets, AT Paddles, Rocky Mountain Sporting Goods. September was a Sweet month for late season boating. I was able to make it down to Gore fest with Luke, Baker, and Toft;mainly thanks to Luke for driving up to Bozeman to enjoy some Gally and pick me up. We also were able made it back into Fremont Canyon where Luke and I made the Second known full descent of the canyon.

Luke Sutton amongst it, The Jackalope

Fremont Canyon, Polish Gnar Bar from Mike Perry on Vimeo.

Fremont Canyon is one place i can see my self being drawn back to particularily with more H20. We enjoyed a much steeper lower canyon than we anticipated; and ate crawdad's at the take out, at least 3 miles of lake paddling in a gorgeous canyon luminated by the setting sun.. paddling out and reaching the take out by 9 was the plan and we were able to beat the time by 20 minutes, and still have time for a beer before the flatwater.
Continued to stay wet on the Gally and managed to score some laps on quake. As October aproached the amount of times i look at a map increases as well as gauges, i was wasting some time on the buzz, when i received a message from Nate, yo Pots, or soemthing i was mildly incoherent as an instant jolt of the shit i crave hit me, "Kayaking... Pots.. Stillwater.... Novalty..Pots Falls in.." is about all i could pretty much comprehend at the moment.. I love to kayak, Big Water, to the lowest shit pill mank creeks most people wouldnt care to look at(east fork elk horn creek) doesnt matter to me. Sometimes this is good but sometimes you do find yourself in places of question; brings me to this...

Author,Drop into the Wall

Glenn Watt, Drop Into the Wall

last of the upper pots

The Pots, of the Stillwater, is beautiful mile long section, of canyon, that so happens to be the put in for the woodbine; as well as the take out for the 3 day mission on the Upper Stillwater. It felt like a miniture version of Big South and PoPo Agie squeezed down to one mile. Perfect for those paddlers just needing a quick fix. Overall this Mank novalty was well worth the effort and gas from Bozeman, containing over a hand full of well placed boofs. I had pleasure of enjoying the whole creek top to bottom. Totally happy today just chilling and sitting back. Luke put together a great Rodeo on his birthday none the less, so found it fitting to take him out and get him into a super intimate gorge.. Fremont Canyon was def stout. trying to figure out what the aprox. flow was but the gauged outflow for Pathfinder Reservoir was reading 4800+ and depending how much was being taken undeground we estimated flows to be about 2600-2800cfs give or take a bit. Fremont Canyon has stomped my expectations.. the main gorge above the bridge contains one super choice class 4 rapid dubbed sitting bowl for the chance to sit and chill and do your thing before entering the partially unportageable gorge and the following drops are of the highest quality. The two remaining drops are amazingly stout, Class 5 paddling in an intiminating gorge due to no possible safety and some big ass sieves.
The second drop is alot steeper than it looks from the top as you scout on the way up..i dubbed this one Cali Classic due to the big water boof you stomp river right off a sweet tonge flake, onto a bad ass lateral toilet bowling feature, than get juiced back to the right... The enormious wall splits the flow making a very difficult looking eddy to exit, on river left. I remember paddling up plan was to move left to right, as we paddle to the horizon i said right due to the giant wall... The 3rd drop was originally dubbed Caveman due to the nasty shit on the right but the fact is the entire drop contains over a hand full of hidden seives.. We dubbed that biia, Geranimo for one of the toughest Natives, The Upper Canyon above the main gorge contains a sweet pool drop entrance rapid dubbed John Fremont. After that sweet entry rapid you paddle up to the would be car size boulder seive section and best way to compare it would be Royal Gorge of the Ark, and the Mad Mile section of the Gallatin at peak flows.... Big Laterals, Big pour overs, and alot of fun in general.. This run moved up my list to Top 5 which includes. Big Timber, Big South, Henry's Fork, Boxelder Creek... still got some editing too do for some Mesa and Fremont footage as well as some Rodeo action... been a really good weekend, vid and pics coming really soon.

with that i want to give a shout out to my boys GYGK and throw up the link for teague's sick vid of the Sweet action from the Henry's Fork and Lower Mesa Falls...

Macho Munchies

Just another update. Casper Wyo has been going off this year. Fremont Canyon ran for the first time since 84', Luke, David, and Jason layed treats on the sweet class IV gorge.
Macho Munchies ran for the first time in 4 years and I cant say how nice it was seeing the features at the Casper Whitewater park how they are suppose to be. Deep Bouncy wave holes.
David Schmitt was on Rodeo Tour most of the summer and is Wrapping up on the slave as we speak living out of the leaky truck which is still no match to my new 93' red chevy lumina.. steezzzy , sorry for almost breaking your nose before Team Trials bro..
I, myself have been enjoying the highwater treats around the area and many many laps up the hyalite canyon before it stopped running this last week. align="center">Austin Woody super classy BOOF

Deer Creek is one of the most unique gems in the Casper area. Located east of Casper 20 minutes, running north from the laramie range, the creek drops through some sweet layers of earth, while the run is prodominately granite theres some other rock layers mixed in aswell. As far as flow; we estimated the flow to be close to 1000cfs. Do to the fact that Boxelder gauge was 825cfs; Deer Creek is a bigger drainage all together, w/ less irrigation before the putin. The lower canyon is the highest quality read and run, holes and boulder drops.

driving up the swichback to the put in

Austin, Dschmitt and myself arrived at the Banner ranch gate just before the beginning of the meadow between the upper deer creek plateu and the main platte basin. The weather was ideal for hiking the 2.5 to 3 miles to the put in at the beginning of the lower canyon/possible take out for the upper canyon, if resorting to plan b is the better option.

classic deer creek read and run

The canyon consisted of one main gorge after a sweet 3/4 mile of stout read and run. exiting the gorge is the crux of the run. Gilligans island leading directly into the Vorox. mostly straight forward rapids; the island is undercut and a giant sieve. After some more read and run, the squeeze box comes up on you which is a granite gorge that has the creek flowing direclty over the bedrock. It's super fast and has unusually big holes! My favorite rapid on the creek hands down. The run ends with some good read and run to the take out, where you have one long ass shuttle to the put in and back out to the interstate.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; and when you are boating, its almost as if you were dreaming... and so it goes.

The season is early and every year i want it earlier. Just moving out to Bozeman this last fall has been the greatest decision i could have made; with all the great options with boating and boarding. i have had little time to actually do something with this website. So heres to Casper Wyo. My hometown(unfortunately) which has taught me many good lessons and was the unlikely place were i started boating some decade ago.

So to start the season, how about little Quake Lake solo POV. Luke decided to motivate and we went 2 days in a row after work. It is located about 1.5 hours south of Casper between Kortez and Pathfinder Reservoirs The Platte was being released at 4300 cfs through the Kortez Dam. The run which turned out to be a awsome class III, with one fun IV with possible seive consequences, was a great time and would be fun for beginners. To say the least... miricle mile is good stuff with more than likely anything over 3000 possibly 2400. one really sweet drop to run with a seive and a nasty hole down the gut was the drop immediately after putting in. We were also rewarded with a sweet play wave near the put in. luke decided to name it Miner Delight cause he was sure delighted to find such a sick wave and there's a actual Gold Mine less than half mile south east. don't know the beta on when the wave is running but will try to keep some tabs. just under 4k was good and same with 4300cfs. Multiple take out and put in options are available. BLM camping is available almost down the entire run.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351762252490564354" style="DISPLAY: block; The gorge walls start working there way sooner than expected with the gradient picking increasing till the gorge proper.

Pat Toft Micro Machine

beautiful colors in the gorge.. life is everywhere. and we are livin it.

sorry for the trees, looking down into the already pretty walled up gorge, with view of the canyon rim.

Gobstopper
most of the water inbetween looked like this pretty busy and desperately in need of more cfs.

Pat Toft solitude on Bates Creek.

Pat Toft running don't swim

Captain Crunch unrunnable at anything under 225 cfs to be safe. ledge and rock in the middle left and right could possible go. easily portageable right left at low flows don't know about eddie access when flows come up. more good class V in spots and IV and III for the remaining couple of miles to the take out bridge.

The take out bridge and the level. Due to seives and not enough water flow the gorged out canyon is beautiful yet hardly called whitewater. the upper canyon before the gorged out section has the John Fremont boof( named after the original 1st D by John Fremont and crew way back when in the date of wood army boats.) The flows flucuate between a min of 500 cfs and a max of 4000 cfs which is a good start to a great time. The Casper park is a big water park most of the features are good at between 2k and excellent at 5k. Here's a couple of pics of the 4k from this last week, only a couple good days due to continual snowfall. Enjoy

Wyoming legend Ed Conning with the correct form on the rock boof at the put in to the upper upper canyon. This is the seived out Rock referenced in the New Testement by Cutch and Stafford.

The upper Shoshone is very unique to say the least. with year-round flows of about 100-150 cfs, it makes it a great early season/ creek practice and its a great run period.

The upper contains couple 2-3 foot ledge drops and couple 4 feet drops and one good 6 footer. The bad part is it only lasts about 1/3 mile. At the end of the creeky section the power plant puts in the rest of the water depending on flow.

Robert Grant- in the pool in the middle of "Top Drop"

Steve and Ed from cody. I would like to have taken more pics of the lower canyon which contains entrance exam, customs, iron curtain and a good juicy rapid called Pinball. don't think to lightly of the class III Entrance Exam we had a close encounter with the undercut wall resulting in a yardsell and what could have been a horrible swim.

Take out: is off Demaris road near the end of town and the beginning of the mouth of the canyon. head north towards the river staying left on the forks.

Put in: is either at the Hayden's bridge for the lower canyon and at the drainage culvert on the north side of the highway at the pull off nearly parallel to the power plant. DO NOT SLIDE down the culvert. Once down you can either carry across the bridge to put in above s-turn or you can continue on the road for about 1/3 mile until you walk through the tunnel. immediately after the tunnel to your left you will see the seive and big rock you put in on.
